Painting your suite? Be very careful to ensure no paint gets on sprinklers Even the smallest drop of paint on your sprinklers can cause them to not work properly AND when it comes time for sprinkler inspections, the paint will result in the sprinkler having to be replaced at the owner's cost. One sprinkler cost over $200 including installation for me.
Thermostat replacement I found an interesting video on YouTube where the person was replacing a nearly identical thermostat to the one that is in my suite.
How to keep the dryer vent clear If your dryer vent becomes plugged with lint, it's a lot more difficult to clear than if you were living in a house because the dryer vent duct is long and it's exit to the outside is inaccessible for most suite owners. It's also at the end where lint tends to build up. If it's really bad, it will take a lot longer for your dryer to dry clothes, and the build-up of lint becomes a fire hazard. Either you'll have to wait for all the suites to get theirs done at the next cleaning interval, or you'll have to contact your building's Property Management company to arrange to get someone in to unplug it.
The next time the dryer duct work is cleaned, I recommend that owners install a nifty filter you can purchase at Home Hardware in Selkirk. The filter has to be cleaned after every load just as you should your dryer lint trap but you'll never have to worry about a clogged dryer duct again because it stops nearly all of the lint in it's trap instead of it going into the duct work in your wall.
How to turn off the water in the bathrooms of your suite (at least in building #1) There are two little valves inside the wall and under each bathroom vanity. One is for hot water and the other for cold. They are brass and slotted. They may be behind round, silver covers which you just pry off. You'll need a standard screwdriver to turn off the water. Not only does it turn off water to the sink, it also turns water off to the toilet and bath. Turning these off doesn't turn all water off in your suite. Look for turn-off valves under your kitchen sink for additional turn-off valves.
Where to purchase the furnace filter (at least for building #1) Home Hardware in Selkirk sells them. I also received a tip from a fellow owner who said that a place called "The Filter Shop" on Church Street in the Fife Street/Inkster area in Winnipeg sells them at a reduced price.
" I buy 3 for $7.95 each at a time - however, you can order as much or as few as you like - quite a saving!"
